Public Health Department Cleans Makwasa Market

The Department of Public Health at the Malamulo College of Health Sciences in Thyolo has challenged the citizenry to observe hygiene every time to avoid waterborne diseases, such as dry-season cholera.

The department’s practicum coordinator, McPherson Mphande, says people should not have the perception that the cholera outbreak becomes common during rainfall seasons, as the country also grappled with the dry cholera some two years ago.

Mphande said this today after Makwasa market cleaning exercise, and health talk on cholera, Mpox, and food hygiene, where it was noted that many people practice open defecation as at least 15 of over 2, 000 vendors use the paying toilet daily.

Malamulo Health Surveillance Assistant (HSA), Naomi Ganiza, admitted that hygiene is compromised at the market, especially on refuse management and sanitation on food stuff.

Meanwhile, the market chairperson, Jones Makolija, faulted the district council for having only one person to clean two markets of Makwasa and Ntambanyama, adding that they are working to ensure cleanliness.
